Oborona Youth Movement

Oborona’s English Blog »

Who we are

We are the new, free generation. We grew up in a free country, we do not fear authority, and we are not burdened by the experience of the Soviet past.

There can be different opinions about the political and economic reforms of the 1990s but we will not waste energy on useless arguments about the past, we care about the future.

It is customary to assume Russian young people are cynical and passive. But there is another type of young people – thinking, daring, interested in the fate of their country, ready to take upon themselves responsibility for their own future. There are few of us yet, but we grow in number every day.

The authorities attempt to preserve the existing elite, preventing entry by new thinkers. Only the most dependent, dumb and agressive part of the youth is supposed to replace the existing government. We won’t go this way!

What we do in Oborona

We defend our rights and express our ideas, but we do not earn money from it nor do we make careers by it.

We strive so that the authorities depend on the people, yet we do not aim to become the new rulers.

We prove uur love for our Motherland by our deeds, not by meaninglessly shouting “patriotic” slogans.

In our struggle Oborona relies only on nonviolent methods.

Our demands

We want to live in a free and flourishing country.

We want a combat-effective and professional army to protect us, and freedom for students to study in peace.

We want the democratic transfer of power via free and popular elections.

We want to be able to obtain information from a free and independent media.

We want to work in companies without fearing that they will be shut down by bandits or corrupt officials.

We want the law to be equally applied to all and not used as a tool against the dissent.

We want an honest budget, which has the money for students and public sector employees, not for officials’ allowances.

Now is the time to have our say.

For our support we rely on the power of truth and our committment to our goals, not the politicians, parties, or money-bags.

Our contemporaries in adjacent countries have already changed the course of the history. Now the time is ours!
